Revisiting the Watsonia

The Watsonia are getting harder to find - but with a bit of searching Tom and I still found quite a few ...some of them quite large ones ... often hiding under the skirt of a Balga ...

Good time for fungi

The regular rain over the past few weeks has brought up a number of fungi in the bushland. The flowers are also coming - the bushland will soon be at its most colourful!
These fungi were at the base of a (live) jarrah tree.
We worked on removing freesias and geraldton carnation weed - mainly along the paths created for the old prisoner of war camp site. Also removed one Fountain Grass in flower.

On the 6th July I joined Roz, Dorothy, and a colleague of Roz in the bushland looking for Fungi.

The next day, Corne found this wattle. What is it? My guess is Acacia podalyriifolia  (commonly known as Silver Wattle).

Some friends donated old carpet - for our trials to see if covering BlackFlag can help us control this weed. There are two patches here - the top one has rubberised underfelt beneath the carpet that may reduce water infiltration into the soil and inhibit plants poking through the carpet. We will see what happens!

Planning for 2013 Planting Day (23 June)

Vicky Shannon (City of Nedlands Environmental Conservation Coordinator) is helping us organise a planting day on Sunday 23rd June 9am-11am. Today I have walked around the bushland to check out possible planting sites for the 500 plants that Vicki has organised for us:
  • Allocasuarina fraseriana 150
  • Banksia attenuata 10
  • Dianella revoluta 79
  • Eucalyptus marginata 31
  • Jacksonia furcellata 41
  • Jacksonia sericea 200
I have identified the following locations for planting (with approximate plant numbers indicated):

Winter weeding has begun

Weather still feels like late summer - warm sunny days, but we have had enough rain to bring the weeds up ... freesia, geraldton carnation weeds ... so we are back at the old familiar weeding activities. First, on 5 May 2013 we finished of our pelargonium weeding from the previous weeks ... this one was quite a big patch.

On 12 May we began working along the western fenceline looking for freesias and geraldton carnation weeds, and also came across a few Fountain Grass patches as well to remove.

Autumn, Sun Moths, Pelargonium ... waiting for the rain to come

Autumn is always a time of waiting for the rain to come, and with it the weeds. We just cruise around the bushland doing odd things, like looking for the Graceful Sun Moth (which only comes out for a few weeks in autumn to breed before burrowing back into the ground), and pulling out patches of pelargonium that have survived the summer.

Autumn Activities

We are enjoying the cooler mornings for our bushland activities ... and had some nice rain recently that refreshed the bushland a little ...

Did some weeding along the eastern boundary of the bushland.

On the day of our committee meeting we did a little bit of weeding before the meeting ... found lots of rubbish along Lemnos St, and an eastern states eucalypt that someone planted that we will need to remove.

Great to see Erin this morning! We did a bit of weeding, and then went off in search of the Graceful Sun Moth - and found one! Unfortunately, didn't have a camera to record it.
